Flower Power Day at Barnstaple Library
Posted on 13 Jun 2023Flowers and plants are set to take over Barnstaple Library for a special summer day of fun activities.
Flower Power Day on Saturday 15th July will offer visitors everything from a drop-in paper flower craft workshop and a chance to make perfumes, to flower-themed biscuits in the café!
The day is being rolled out as part of ‘Pride of Place’, the first season of an exciting new three-year programme of creative events being introduced by Libraries Unlimited in Devon and Torbay. The initiative is being funded by a £720,369 grant from Arts Council England to boost the charity’s thriving programme of music, films, workshops and high quality community events in libraries between 2023 and 2026.
Jane Petch, Barnstaple Library Supervisor, said: “We are all excited about Flower Power Day – this is the first time we’ve tried such an ambitious one-day programme of events. You can come and see the foyer decorated with paper flowers from the Barnstaple in Bloom workshops and psychedelic flowers created by the Barnstaple FabLab from drawings by the community. Or come along and make your own flower from recycled books whilst enjoying a cup of speciality tea and flower inspired biscuits in our pop up cafe. We are also proud to have books and early works by local psychedelic artist John Hurford on display in the library.”
“Flowers and foliage are a connection to the environment. Most of us have a favourite, which might link us to a happy memory or a sense of place. We hope we’ve put on events for all ages and interests, and we’re all looking forward to a busy, flower-powered day!”
