Family Theatre for Deaf and Hearing Audiences

Families across Devon are invited to discover the magic of stories this summer as ‘The Librarians’, an enchanting bilingual theatre show for Deaf and hearing audiences, tours seven libraries across the county between 28 and 31 July.

Supported by Arts Council England as part of the National Year of Reading, the intimate performances combine British Sign Language (BSL) and spoken English to create a joyful, accessible experience for children aged 4–9 years and their families.

Created by award-winning touring theatre company HelenandJohn, with performer Alex Nowak, ‘The Librarians’ introduces audiences to the delightfully eccentric Miss Book and Mr Page. Through inventive visual theatre, physical comedy, and imaginative storytelling, the show celebrates the joy of books, creativity, and reading for pleasure.

Alex Kittow, Chief Executive at Libraries Unlimited, said:

“At Libraries Unlimited, we believe everyone should be able to experience the joy of stories. ‘The Librarians’ is a brilliant example of how creativity can bring people together, offering a truly inclusive award-winning theatre experience for Deaf and hearing children and their families. We are delighted to welcome the show to libraries across Devon, creating opportunities for families to enjoy high-quality cultural experiences in welcoming accessible spaces where everyone feels like they belong. We hope it inspires a lifelong love of reading, imagination and creativity for all.”

Councillor Cheryl Cottle-Hunkin, Devon County Council Cabinet Member for Libraries, added:

“Our libraries are places where everyone should feel welcome. This wonderful show brings stories to life in a way that can be enjoyed by Deaf and hearing children together. It’s a great example of how libraries can inspire imagination, bring communities together and help more children discover a love of reading.”
