Reading Challenges

Reading Challenges

Libraries Unlimited champions the importance of reading for pleasure; we know it improves outcomes for young people and increases levels of literacy, empathy and wellbeing for everyone.

We want everyone to experience the joy of reading and stories, using libraries as a safe space to explore new opportunities, from birth onwards.

Libraries Unlimited have developed three exciting and educational reading challenges to inspire children and families to discover the joy of books.

The Secret Book Quest

In 2022, Libraries Unlimited developed The Secret Book Quest, in response to falling literacy levels in the UK.

The Secret Book Quest encourages children aged 5+ to embark on an exciting adventure, reading 50 books to unlock stickers, solve a secret code, and win a prize. Acclaimed illustrator Emily Fox has brought the quest to life by creating a set of characters; Pip, Zena and Libro the cat who invite children to depart on a reading adventure through 10 themed worlds.

To sign up for  FREE, simply visit your local library and speak to a member of staff. Explore your local library, discover your first books, and begin your quest! You will receive your very own Secret Book Quest journal and the first sticker in your collection.

The Secret Book Quest Online

The Secret Book Quest is now online! There are now a bolt-on set of digital activities to accompany the existing Reading Challenge. With online quizzes and games and a whole new adventure for Pip, Zena and Libro, children unlock content as they journey through the different zones.

Libro’s Friends!

Following the success of The Secret Book Quest, Libro’s Friends was created for under 5s (EYFS), inviting families to explore their library, collect stickers, and meet Libro the cat’s special animal friends.

To sign up for FREE, simply visit your local library and speak to a member of staff.

You will receive your very own Libro’s Friends booklet, and the first sticker in your collection.

The Summer Book Quest

From 2025, children aged 4-12 can take part in The Summer Book Quest, running July to September. Join Libro and friends on a new adventure; track your reading, enjoy visits to the library and complete special activities, then collect your medal and certificate!

Sign up at your local library in the summer holidays, complete fun activities and enjoy the stories you love to complete the challenge.
