Travel to Japan through the power of story!

On Thursday 6 August, Exeter Library is delighted to welcome acclaimed kamishibai storyteller and musician Kana Hayashi from Tokyo for a series of special free performances. Kana has captivated audiences across Japan, Europe and South America, and we’re thrilled to host her during her visit to Devon.

Joining Kana is local storyteller Sara Hurley, also known as Isabella’s Story Bicycle, who shares a passion for this unique and enchanting storytelling tradition.

Kamishibai, meaning “paper theatre”, began in Japan in the 1930s when storytellers travelled between towns and parks on bicycles, stopping to entertain children with illustrated stories presented in a miniature wooden theatre. Today, kamishibai is enjoyed in schools, libraries and public spaces around the world, and is often considered an early inspiration for modern manga and animation.

Expect colourful illustrations, engaging storytelling and a chance to discover a fascinating part of Japanese culture. These short performances are ideal for children and families, but audiences of all ages are warmly welcome.

No booking required – simply drop in and enjoy.
