Reading Tree | James Lake Sculpture

Exeter-based sculptor James Lake has crafted a beautiful, site-specific sculpture for Barnstaple Library dubbed the Reading Tree.

James Lake created this sculpture during a residency at the old GAP shop on Exeter High Street in autumn 2022, as part of the Your Library on the High Street project.

With the support of Creative Technologist Jay Kerry, the Reading Tree was carefully installed in Barnstaple Library, offering a new way to experience the space.

The Reading Tree evolves with the seasons, adjusting and decorating throughout the year to mirror nature’s cycles.

This transformation speaks to the ever-changing role of libraries as they serve different communities, providing an open, adaptable space for all.

As the tree grows and changes, it symbolizes the library’s ongoing relevance in society, adapting to the needs of its users and becoming a dynamic space for creativity and connection.

The Reading Tree is on display now at Barnstaple Library during regular opening hours.
