Reading Challenges

Libro’s Friends

Libro’s Friends will help develop a love of reading in under-5s.

Children who visit their library will receive a sticker book, and can choose from a wide selection of books to spark their imaginations.

Reading together is valuable family bonding time, and the challenge supports the development of speech and language skills.

The Secret Book Quest

The Secret Book Quest inspires a life-long love of reading in 5-12-year olds.

Each child who signs up is taken on a journey into the endless world of adventure through reading. It inspires children to read 50 books, at all abilities and confidence levels.

Summer Reading Challenge

Each year, thousands of children take part in the national Summer Reading Challenge which aims to address the education gap that can occur during the long school holiday.

School partnerships

We work in partnership with schools to provide vital support and activities that span the curriculum – from visiting nurseries and early years settings, to delivering story times, workshops and school assemblies.

We work with specialist schools, providing space and provision for tutoring sessions. We also attend school fayres and open days, encouraging families to join the library, and supporting children to realise their full potential.

We also work with schools on  cultural projects, poetry, history and library competitions.

Impact Story

This year, Torquay Library received funding from World Book Day to become a community exchange hub.

‘In addition to enabling children to exchange their tokens for books in the library, the funding allowed us to create a programme of events to engage with local schools and encourage reading for pleasure.

Staff spent a day at a local school with a children’s author and her pugs. The children were read a story and were asked the author questions as well as meeting the dogs!

We also held an author event at the library, with story time and craft activities.

Local celebrity, Patrick the Therapy Pony, even visited the library with his book!

We reached over 500 children during World Book Day and have seen the ripple effects from these activities, including reading for pleasure schemes initiated in local schools and an increase in junior reading group borrowing.’

Libraries Unlimited believes…

…in the unlimited potential of library services to make a positive difference to people’s lives and communities through a shared love of reading and access to high quality information and facilities.
