uffculme library buildingA special invitation to local children to discover Uffculme’s newly refurbished library has been issued by Libraries Unlimited.

The updated library opened on Monday 7th December. As well as new shelving, paintwork and noticeboards in the main library, the children’s area now has upgraded seats and tables and a fresh new look.

The library has been closed since Friday 20th November for the work which was funded by Tesco Bags of Help, an Investing in Devon Grant (from Devon County Council), and Uffculme Library Friends.

Current COVID lockdown restrictions mean that browsing is limited to one adult and one child from the same household in the library at any one time.  Adult supervision is also required, as books which have been touched but aren’t being checked out are put on to a table for quarantining.

Libraries Unlimited Chief Executive Alex Kittow said: “We are delighted to be able to offer a refreshed look at this much-loved library to our customers in Uffculme. We particularly hope that local parents and children will pop in to see what it’s like, especially if they haven’t used the library for a while. Parents and carers have been through extraordinarily tough times this year trying to keep up with children’s education during the lockdown school closures. We want to remind them that libraries are here, not just with books but with clubs, events, online access and so much more. We hope that we can really help out at this critical time”

Jenny Bell, Senior Supervisor in charge of Uffculme Library, said: “The library is looking so much more fresh and inviting, and we believe both loyal and new Uffculme customers will really appreciate the updated look.”

Rita Balado, Chair Uffculme Library Friends, said: “A big thank you to Uffculme residents who have supported Uffculme Library Friends’ fund raising events to help finance improvements to their library.  I am especially pleased that the children’s section will look so much more inviting and I am sure they will be happy with their new furniture.”

Uffculme Library is managed by Libraries Unlimited, the charity responsible for running Devon and Torbay Libraries.
