Libraries Unlimited Awarded for supporting health and wellbeing
Posted on 25 Sep 2024Libraries Unlimited has been recognised and awarded by the Community Libraries Network for its health and wellbeing programme.
Libraries Unlimited are unwavering in their commitment to providing free essential services that aim to reduce health inequalities and combat loneliness. These include warm banks in winter, IT support, work clubs, and a ‘Home Library’ service for those who are housebound. There are also many wellbeing events and groups including sensory sessions, menopause cafes, dementia cafes, walking groups and conversation classes for refugees. There are free baby weighing facilities at most libraries and a selection of ‘Reading Well’ books available.
Now about to enter its third winter, Libraries Unlimited’s ‘Cold Days, Warm Libraries’ campaign was originally developed in response to the increasing challenges faced by local communities, due to the Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent cost-of-living crisis, and forms part of the national ‘warm welcome’ campaign. Many projects and extra provisions are implemented every winter to reach the most vulnerable, including: winter coat rails, free refreshments and energy advice sessions.
Health and Wellbeing Development Manager, Beth Harris said, “Last winter we received 1.2 million visits between 1 October and 31 March. In 2022, 50% of adults in the UK reported feeling lonely occasionally, sometimes, often or always. Loneliness and isolation is considered to be one of the most pressing public health problems that the UK is currently facing, recognised by the World Health Organisation. The effects of being lonely and socially isolated are vast, and affect all areas of health, wellbeing and development; from serious medical conditions, to education and employment implications. Libraries are one of the few remaining free community spaces that are open for everyone, everywhere: and we are committed to supporting our communities. We are always looking for ways to enhance and improve our offer, so if you are a trust, foundation or business considering supporting the most vulnerable across our region, we would love to hear from you.’
The Community Libraries Network Awards Programme is a way to celebrate the achievements of individuals, teams and organisations in the community library sector.
The Community Managed Libraries National Peer Network (CMLPN) supports community-managed libraries (CMLs) across the UK. This network helps these libraries operate effectively by sharing ideas, learning, experiences, and inspiration. It aims to strengthen the links between community libraries and ensure they continue to thrive in their communities.
