Libraries’ prize bonanza for children who read six books

Posted on 23 Aug 2021

Children across Devon are being given an extra incentive to complete this year’s Summer Reading Challenge in libraries.

Any child who succeeds in finishing the Challenge and reading six books will be put into a prize draw. The fantastic prizes on offer include three Samsung tablets, book tokens and tickets to family days out.

Libraries Unlimited Reading Development Manager Lucy Banks said: “The Summer Reading Challenge is our popular yearly incentive to keep children loving books throughout their summer holidays. Every child that finishes will get a certificate and a medal. Some libraries have bonus prizes too such as mugs and toys.”

“But this year we know that there are many children around Devon who have been affected by lockdown and missing school and may be struggling with their reading. So we wanted to give them this extra encouragement.”

In 2019 there were 7,811 who finished the challenge in Devon, along with 849 in Torbay. Last year’s Challenge, during library closures, was much smaller, but it’s hoped this year’s will achieve a big boost in numbers.

The Summer Reading Challenge is running until Friday 20th September. Children who read six books by that time will have their names added into the ‘Grand Finisher’s Prize Draw’. The 17 prizes, which are being funded by Devon County Council, are:

  • 3 x Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 32 GB Wi-Fi Android Tablet – Silver (UK Version)
  • 10 x £50 National Book Tokens
  • Paignton Zoo Annual Family Pass
  • 4 x Annual Silver Pass to Crealy (Devon) – single prize for one family
  • 4 x Big Sheep North Devon Annual Membership – single prize for one family
  • 4 x Annual Pass (two adult, two children) to Woodlands Adventure Park – singe prize for one family

The draw will take place at 4.30pm on Monday 27th September in Exeter Library’s children’s library and will be broadcast live on the library’s Facebook page.

The prize draw is only open to children who complete the Summer Reading Challenge in a library run by Libraries Unlimited on behalf of Devon County Council; libraries in Torbay are not included in this draw.

The following T&Cs apply for the free prize draw – deadline for entry will be when the Summer Reading Challenge ends at 9am on Monday 20th September; the prize will be drawn live at 4:30pm on Monday 27th September in Exeter Library’s children’s library and broadcast live on their Facebook page; all eligible finishers will be allocated a unique number and a random number generator will be used to pick each winner; one of the prizes will be drawn at random “from a hat” and the two (prize and finisher) combined; the winners will be notified within 7 days of the draw using the contact details on their library account; any prizes not collected within one month of the notification will be re-drawn; the prizes are non-transferable; employees of Libraries Unlimited are not eligible for entry; the prize draw is only open to children who complete the Summer Reading Challenge in a library run by Libraries Unlimited on behalf of Devon County Council; libraries in Torbay are not included in this draw.
