Give the gift of reading – light a star on Libraries Unlimited magical Christmas tree

Posted on 22 Nov 2021

Children readingA gift that could give children in Devon and Torbay a lifelong love of reading is on offer from Libraries Unlimited this Christmas.

The charity, which runs 54 libraries and 4 mobile libraries around Devon and Torbay, has launched a glittering online Christmas tree where donations buy a virtual Christmas star, a special message to loved ones and help fund vital services.

The fundraiser is the latest in Libraries Unlimited’s programme of measures to support children who’ve been left behind with their learning from schools being closed during the pandemic lockdown.

We’ve loved welcoming everyone back to our libraries after lockdown and seeing so many children enjoy events in the library.” said Alex Kittow, Libraries Unlimited’s Chief Executive Officer.

“This is really important work for us. We know many children slipped behind with their reading and learning during lockdown. Research shows a loss of 2.2 months in reading for pupils in primary school at the end of March 2021. There’s endless information, entertainment and inspiration in every library, all aimed at encouraging a life-long love of reading and helping kids get excited about learning. We’ve got book clubs, our new Secret Book Quest reading challenge launched in November, and for the very little ones our Bounce & Rhyme and Music Rhythm and Rhyme sessions give children the gift of enjoying books from an early age. “

“This Christmas we’re giving people the chance to help us make a lasting impact on children in Devon and Torbay.”

Each donation reveals a glittering star on the online Libraries Unlimited Christmas Tree and a special message to friends and family which can be shared via email and social media.

What a donation will help pay for:

  • £5 helps to provide one Bounce & Rhyme or Music Rhythm and Rhyme session for a child in their local library. These fun and friendly sessions for families with under 5’s promote learning of songs, rhymes and movement to help children develop their language and motor skills.
  • £10 helps to fund one Secret Book Quest package for a child. This new and exciting reading challenge will help a child grow their love of reading.
  • £30 helps to provide three Storytime sessions. These sessions allow children to enjoy a fun tale or two read by friendly library staff.

Every penny raised goes directly towards library services in Devon and Torbay, helping to make a difference to people’s lives and communities.

The virtual Christmas tree goes live on Monday 22nd November 2021 and will be displayed until Wednesday 5th January 2022.  To donate go to https://bit.ly/LU-Fundraiser-Christmas
