Championing sustainability this Green Libraries Week
Posted on 07 Oct 2024
It’s Green Libraries Week 2024! From October 7th to 13th, we’re celebrating the incredible initiatives our libraries are creating and participating in. From community gardens, warm coat and uniform banks, community fridge projects, to children’s toy swaps and even a Halloween costume swap, our libraries are transforming into vibrant hubs of sustainability.
Over the past year, Ottery St Mary Library has partnered with Recycling for Good Causes, a scheme focused on reducing landfill waste while raising valuable funds for charity. They’ve already filled and sent off one box of recyclable items, and are well on their way to filling a second. Contributions have ranged from small items like used stamps and broken costume jewellery to larger electronics such as phones, tablets, and game consoles.
Many customers have brought in handfuls of old mobile phones that had been sitting around their homes for years, unsure of how to dispose of them. Thanks to this scheme, these phones are now being recycled, keeping them out of landfill and helping to raise funds for the library.
Kerry, Ottery St Mary Library’s supervisor, expressed her excitement, saying, “This project fits perfectly with the green principles of reduce, reuse, and recycle that are at the heart of libraries. Being centrally located in the town means we’re perfectly placed to support our community in projects like this. We offer a free and welcoming space, and our customers love contributing to green schemes that align with the library’s values.”
We’re so proud of all the green initiatives being championed by our libraries across Devon and Torbay. So why not pop into your local library this Green Libraries Week and discover what they’re doing to create a more sustainable future for all!
