Celebrate LGBT+ History Month this February with poignant film screenings at Exmouth Library

Posted on 04 Feb 2022

Two specially chosen films, Sweetheart (2021) and Pride (2014), will be showing at Exmouth Library on Friday 18th February to mark LGBT+ History Month.

LGBT+ history month takes place each year in February and gives the opportunity to reflect on the history of the LGBT+ community. Events are scheduled throughout the country, and Exmouth Library is taking part again this year by hosting two screenings as a part of the programme of events organised by Exmouth Pride.

Hannah Cooper, First Assistant at Exmouth Library said “We are delighted to be hosting two more films this year to coincide with LGBT+ history month. We worked closely with Exmouth Pride to choose two impactful movies that people can come along and watch together at the library. There will be a warm welcome and light refreshments available”.

Sweetheart (2021) is a charming coming-of-age story about environmentally conscious teenager AJ, who falls in love with a lifeguard (Isla) on an otherwise unbearable family holiday.

Pride (2014) is a historical comedic drama telling the true story of LGBT activists that raised money for families affected by the British Miners’ Strike in 1984.

Exmouth Pride’s Al Brown, part of the team putting the programme together, said: “Different things appeal to different people but sometimes we are reluctant to try new stuff that we might enjoy. We hope that this programme will encourage people to try something new, get together and meet other LGBT+ people in a welcoming and supportive way.”

He added: “2022 sees the 50th anniversary of the first Pride march in the UK, campaigning for equal rights. This film celebrates the sense of community that Pride events can help build. Here in Exmouth we are still building on that legacy.”

Sweetheart (2021) will be showing at 4pm on Friday 18th February, and Pride (2014) is scheduled for 7pm. Both films have an age classification rating of 15. Tickets cost £5 to see one film or pay £6 to attend both screenings.
