Brixham Library to undergo full refurbishment

Brixham Library, run by Devon-based charity Libraries Unlimited, will be closing its doors from Monday 28 October for four weeks over November to allow for refurbishment.

Thanks to funding from Torbay Council and a donation of more than £4,000 from the Friends of Brixham Library and £100 from the Rotary Club of Brixham, the library will undergo an exciting renovation. The building will be newly decorated throughout with new carpets, new shelving and furniture on the ground floor and a newly decorated and refreshed meeting room.

Libraries Unlimited, the charity that runs Torbay Libraries on behalf of Torbay Council, will be carrying out the work using specialist contractors, making sure the newly refreshed library will meet the needs of the local community and offer them an even more enjoyable and welcoming space to visit.

Library customers will be welcomed back to the library on Monday 25th November, when they will be able to browse the light, spacious and welcoming new library, complete with new signage and some additional seating.

Cabinet Member for Corporate and Community Services, Cllr Christine Carter, said: “Libraries Unlimited do a sterling job running our Torbay libraries and this refurbishment will breathe new life into our Brixham Library. During the closure period, services can still be accessed at Churston, Paignton and Torquay libraries and accounts can be managed online.”

Brixham Library is one of four libraries in Torbay run by Libraries Unlimited, who are also responsible for the running of Devon’s 50 libraries and the mobile library service on behalf of Devon County Council.

It’s a popular library in a buzzing town, and we know that our library customers will be thrilled with the bright new space we have planned. Since we took on the running of Torbay Libraries just 18 months ago, we’ve also been able to secure funding to improve Torquay’s teen library in collaboration with young people in the area. Library seating, shelving and décor can make a huge difference to people’s experiences when they walk through our doors, so we hope that the people of Brixham will be in for a real treat when the library opens again on Monday 25th November. We’re grateful to Torbay Council for providing the funds for us to make vital improvements to this library.”

Brixham Library customers are encouraged to use Churston, Paignton and Torquay libraries whilst the work is being carried out. All library customers can also access their accounts to reserve and renew items or browse the catalogue online at torbaylibraries.org.uk.
